We're having a very wet and windy February , with Storm Ciara and Storm Dennis passing through. The paths have turned into streams😕 -but I'm sure it would be much worse without this magic moss😮 Sphagnum mosses may hold 16 to 26 times as much water as their dry weight.
I've just tested this in a school experiment weighing dry moss and working out how much water it will absorb. Apparently Vikings used it for nappies and it's absorbency rate was comparable to the modern disposable nappies.
Sphagnum Moss is also essential for the creation of peat bogs which take thousands of years to build up.
